5th sketch - [voice]

[Jeb has been thinking about what happened right before he was taken here a lot more as of late... about what happened with Donovan. No, not Donovan--Aero of Wind. He doesn't want to think that the man never cared, that some of their time together had been sincere. He refuses to believe that it was all a lie, but it still hurts. It hurts that his former friend had put his hometown in a state of being 'frozen.' It hurts that the friend he made ended up being the one who was trying to take the life of Tori, someone who has always meant a lot to him, even before they became romantically involved.

He comes to the conclusion that maybe, just maybe, someone in the village might understand how he feels. He turns on the audio function of his journal, and after a few brief moments, he speaks.]

This is probably a very weird and sudden question, but... um, have any of you ever had a really close friend who then hurt you?

It happened in my world. However, it wasn't the fault of my friend. My friend wouldn't have wanted it to happen.

[He doesn't question the strange response--after all, the question he's asked is a pretty personal one.]

Did your friend have their reasons, then? If they didn't want it to happen, there had to have been a mistake, right? [He sounds hopeful.]

My friend definitely wouldn't have hurt anyone because of wanting to.

That's good to know, at least. Then, maybe... [He doesn't even realize he trailed off in the last part.]

Could it be you worry about the same situation?

Well... you see, I had someone I was really close to turn on me and my other friends. At first, I felt like he used me because of the reasons he gave us... but I don't want to think like that! Maybe he doesn't think there's any other way.

It could be a misunderstanding. Do you believe that?

I want to believe that. I really, really do!

Then please believe in your friend. Find out what happened.

I'll do my best. Even if I forget all about this when I go back home, I'll try to do my best anyway. Somehow, I know I'll find a way. Whoever you are, thank you very much. [His words are most definitely sincere.]

I'm just someone who sort of understands that situation.

[ He does feel a little odd for responding to someone he has never really met, but this is something he doesn't feel like he can easily ignore. After tinkering with the settings a little... ]

I fortunately have not. An instance does pop into my head, but I wouldn't have called that person a "close friend".

I'm glad that hasn't happened to you! ...would you be comfortable sharing the instance you mentioned, though? If not, that's okay too.

I rather not go into too many details. [ It's one of those stories that'd need a lot of background, anyway. ] Someone I worked with betrayed us and caused a lot of trouble back home.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I wonder what people are thinking when they do that... I want to believe that everyone has a reason for doing something like that, something that drives them that isn't as terrible as their actions might make us think. I don't think people are terrible at heart.

Ah... it's alright, really. I never understood his motivations, but I believe that you're right. [ He pauses for a moment, then. ] You have a good heart.

Huh? ...thank you. I'm glad you think so. [Even if he doesn't entirely agree...]

... I don't mean to make you uncomfortable, but did something happen with you?

[A long pause, and then...]

Yes, something did.

I met someone who my friends and I all thought wanted to help us. Me and my twin brother got really close to him, too... but he was really leading what we were trying to fight, and he still wants to hurt someone very dear to me.

... I'm sorry to hear that. Betrayals like that are always hard.

[ A pause. ] Are you safe in Luceti?

It's... well, it's not okay, but I'll be all right.

Huh? Yes, I think so. Why wouldn't I be?

I was wondering in case the person who hurt you was here. That's all.

Oh! Well he isn't, and that's probably for the best...

[Giles spends the first several seconds after hearing this question staring blankly at an inoffensive enough tree.

Oh boy, he hates questions like this. Especially because he always finds them so perversely fascinating...]

How badly?

Friends always manage to hurt one another somehow.

[The response Giles gets is a bit more hesitant and shaky than the actual post.]

Like... like betrayal.

[A change of tone which is noted, and Giles tries to make his tone of voice a bit less obviously affected than it was.]

...I wouldn't have called us, um, "friends". But she was important to me, and she did...she did betray me.

[Not "friends," but important? Then...]

This person... was she--ah, I'm sorry. I shouldn't ask something so personal.

It's fine. It was...i-it was a very long time ago. And I have asked questions equally personal.

...I was never sure. I don't think it ever got quite that far, to anything you could, um, quantify or name. But we were in love, yes. I believe that much.

...I'm really sorry to hear that. When people are in love, they shouldn't betray each other. I don't think anyone should betray someone else, but especially not when the other person is someone they're in love with.

But that's when they often do. When you have that much power over someone, when you know that much about what their heart holds and what they want...well, it's a temptation, and people on the whole tend to be, um, very bad with temptation.

...she was miserable over it, in the end. We, um, we...reconciled.

[It wasn't enough.]

...I wonder why people give into temptation like that.

[...Well. Not really. It's more like she's the one doing the hurting. Normally, she would avoid posts like these, but this is Jeb. He never asks things like this unless he's really feeling upset.]

[But she doesn't trust herself not to break, so have a written reply instead of a spoken one.]

Kinda. Why are you asking? Did something happen?

[Yay, Anise! He's missed you. He quickly writes a reply back, but makes sure his writing is still neat enough to read.]

Oh, don't worry! Nothing's happened here. I've just been recently thinking a lot about something that happened back home.

Oh, good! If anyone here's been mean to you, I'll punch them in the face!

[The next bit is slightly smaller.]

So...what happened? Um, not that you have to tell me if you don't want to.

You don't have to punch them in the face, Anise! Just knowing you're there for me is fine.

[He notices the smaller handwriting for the next bit, but doesn't comment on it.] Back home, I got close to someone. Not romantically, but he and I became really good friends. But it turns out he's behind a group of people who want to kill my girlfriend, someone who has been in my life for as long as I can remember. I don't understand why he wants to do that, but maybe he doesn't think there's any other way. Maybe when I get back, I'll be able to help him. It still hurts, though.

[Romantically...? So...Jeb likes boys as well as girls? She's not sure what she thinks about that, but it isn't important right now.]

You're a pretty nice guy, Jeb. But...yeah, he probably has his reasons. I hope you guys can work everything out together. ♥
